Family-Friendly Destinations We’ve Loved

Traveling with family doesn’t have to mean chaos and compromise. Some destinations just get it—they balance fun for the kids with comfort (and maybe a little relaxation) for the grown-ups. Over the years, we’ve explored cities, coastlines, mountains, and magical spots in between, and these are the places that have earned a special place in our hearts. Here are some of the family-friendly destinations we’ve truly loved—places that made memories easy and left us wanting to return.

1. Copenhagen, Denmark
Clean, safe, and packed with charm, Copenhagen is like a dream for families. You’ve got Tivoli Gardens (a fairytale amusement park in the heart of the city), endless biking paths, and cafes with cozy corners and play areas for kids. Even the museums are interactive and welcoming. Bonus: locals are incredibly kind and patient with little travelers.

2. San Diego, California
With perfect weather and something for every age, San Diego is one of those spots where you can relax and keep the kids busy. The San Diego Zoo lives up to the hype, and spots like Balboa Park and La Jolla Cove offer nature, playgrounds, and wildlife sightings all in one day. Beaches are gentle and family-ready, and there’s always a taco nearby.

3. Kyoto, Japan
Japan might not be the first place that comes to mind with little ones, but Kyoto is surprisingly family-friendly. Think peaceful temples, bamboo forests, and kid-sized portions of noodles and rice. The culture encourages respect and quiet, which often brings out the calmest version of our kids. Add in clean trains, friendly locals, and vending machines with snacks galore—it’s a win.

4. Lake Bled, Slovenia
This storybook lake with a church on an island in the middle feels like stepping into a fairytale. You can walk or bike the whole lake with little effort, rent a rowboat, or enjoy homemade cream cake (a local favorite). It’s peaceful and stunning, and best of all, it’s not too crowded. Perfect for a slower pace and serious beauty.

5. Vancouver, Canada
If you like variety, Vancouver has it. In one day, we’ve biked the seawall, visited a market on Granville Island, and explored a forest suspension bridge. Stanley Park is basically a paradise for families: a giant playground of nature, beaches, totem poles, and an aquarium all rolled into one. Plus, there’s no shortage of cozy cafes and nature trails.

6. Amsterdam, Netherlands
Don’t let its adult reputation fool you—Amsterdam is a dream for families. Rent a cargo bike (where the kids ride up front!) and cruise through flower-lined streets and over bridges. Visit kid-friendly museums like NEMO Science Center, take a canal cruise, or relax in Vondelpark while the kids burn energy at the playgrounds. It’s an easy city to love.

7. Edinburgh, Scotland
Edinburgh is full of stories, castles, and cobbled charm. Our kids loved climbing to Arthur’s Seat and imagining dragons from the top. The castle feels like stepping into a fantasy book, and there are ghost tours for older kids who love a good scare. The city is compact, walkable, and welcoming to families at every turn.

8. Barcelona, Spain
Tapas may have been made for family dining—everyone gets to nibble! Barcelona’s beaches, quirky Gaudí architecture, and sprawling parks make it endlessly entertaining. Park Güell and the Magic Fountain are favorites, and the locals love kids, so don’t be surprised when strangers strike up friendly conversations with your little ones.

9. Costa Rica
Nature, wildlife, beaches, volcanoes, ziplining… Costa Rica is a wonderland for adventurous families. You can explore cloud forests, watch sloths in trees, or splash in warm surf. It’s an easy place to unplug, slow down, and let the outdoors do all the entertaining. Bonus: the eco-lodges often have family-specific accommodations and activities.

10. Washington, D.C., USA
Surprisingly walkable and full of free museums, D.C. is a goldmine for curious kids. Between the Smithsonian museums, the National Zoo, and monuments that feel like real-life history books, there’s always something to do. And when you need a break? Head to the grassy lawns for a picnic or let the kids run wild on the National Mall.

Travel Tips We’ve Learned Along the Way

  • Plan less, enjoy more. Build in wiggle room for naps, meltdowns, and spontaneous joy.

  • Pick lodging with a kitchen. It makes mornings (and picky eaters) way easier.

  • Give kids a little ownership. Let them pick a museum or pack their bag. They’ll be more engaged.

  • Snacks. Always snacks. You’ll never regret it.

  • Don’t skip the “boring” stuff. Kids can find joy in local grocery stores, public transport, or even rainy walks if you frame it with curiosity.

Wherever you go, it’s not about doing it all—it’s about finding small, joyful moments together. These destinations have given us just that, and we hope they’ll do the same for your family.
